State of Indie Launches 2026
A practical field guide to launch channels, directory listings and backlink research for independent founders.
Published October 2026 · Living resource
Key takeaways
- Choose relevance before authority. A directory reaching your target customers can be useful even when it provides little measurable SEO value.
- Do not assume a listing link is dofollow. Inspect the actual public listing and its rendered link attributes.
- Separate discovery from SEO. Product Hunt, Hacker News and relevant communities can bring attention and feedback; they do not guarantee DR improvements.
- Prefer durable listings. Accurate descriptions, working links and category placement help visitors discover products after launch day.
- Submit selectively. Relevant submissions are easier to maintain than mass submissions to unrelated sites.
Launch channels by purpose
These are examples to investigate, not a verified ranking. Confirm current rules, listing availability, prices and link attributes directly before acting.
| Channel | Potential use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Product Hunt | Launch discovery and feedback | Eligibility, profile links and posting rules |
| Hacker News | Technical products and maker stories | Show HN guidelines and community fit |
| Niche communities | Community rules; disclose affiliation and avoid spam | |
| Indie Hackers | Founder stories and feedback | Current profile options and guidelines |
| G2 | B2B software and reviews | Eligibility, review policy, terms and link markup |
| Capterra | Business software discovery | Eligibility, profile requirements and link markup |
| SourceForge | Developer tools | Project requirements and current link attributes |
| AlternativeTo | Products with known alternatives | Submission criteria and listing links |
| SaaSHub | SaaS and alternative discovery | Listing terms and outbound-link markup |
| BetaList | Early-stage products | Fees, queue, eligibility and outbound links |
| Uneed | Indie product discovery | Launch options, pricing and listing details |
| PeerPush | Indie product launches | Submission process and public links |

How to audit a directory backlink
- Open the live public listing page, not just the submission form.
- Find the link pointing to your product's canonical URL.
- Inspect the rendered HTML or developer tools for rel values such as nofollow, sponsored or ugc. Record what is actually present.
- Check that the link is visible, correct and accessible without an account.
- Record the date checked, listing URL, destination URL, price and any reciprocal-link requirement.
Link value is not determined by one attribute alone. Do not add a reciprocal badge solely in expectation of a ranking benefit.
Suggested launch workflow
- Prepare: write a specific value proposition, choose the right category and test your landing page on mobile.
- Pick relevant channels: participate where ideal users already gather and follow community rules.
- Submit selectively: prioritize audience fit, legitimacy, listing quality and reasonable effort.
- Measure outcomes: record referral visits, signups, feedback and listing status. Do not judge a channel by DR alone.
What future editions should measure
- Directories checked and date of each check.
- Submission cost and whether a public listing was accepted.
- Observed outbound-link attributes on actual listing pages.
- Whether listings remain live after 30, 90 and 180 days.
- Referral visits and signups where founders voluntarily share analytics.
Until a documented sample is collected, this edition does not claim that a specific DR range, link attribute or submission count reliably improves rankings.
